Patients and Carers
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the data show?
The data comes from the 2024 National Audit of Care at the End of Life. It helps show how well hospitals cared for people who were dying, and how they supported families, friends, and carers during the person’s final hospital stay.
How often is the data updated?
The data is updated once a year, usually in August.
Can I see hospitals that are doing much better or worse than others?
No. This tool does not show those differences. That information is shared with the hospitals only via a restricted Data and Improvement Tool.
What time period does the data cover?
The data shows care given in hospitals between 1st January 2024 – 31st December 2024.
Why can’t I see the monthly or quarterly totals?
We show the data over a full 12 months. This helps protect people’s privacy and makes the results more useful when the numbers are small. Hospitals get more detailed results in restricted reporting tool to help them make local improvements
How do I get access to the restricted tool?
Only health and care staff from NHS hospitals that took part in the audit, and approved third parties, can access the restricted Data and Improvement Tool.
How is missing data handled in the results?
If data is missing, the tool will show a message that says: “Data not available.”
What happens with small numbers?
If the number is more than 0 but fewer than 20, we hide it to keep people’s information private.
I have feedback about the tool – how can I share it?
